Update

So, I at last had that visit with Dr. Mulcahy at Northwestern, on Wednesday, March 3. I returned the following day for CT scans and ultra-sounds -- the CT scans in order to get a basline on my status prior to any new treatments, and the ultra-sounds to look into some swelling I was seeing in my left and right legs. The past several weeks I'd been suffering through some serious swelling in both legs, the source of which was unclear. I would prop my legs up over-night, to relieve the swelling, but it kept getting worse and worse. So it seems we've got a blood clot in my right leg...nothing appears in the left, though I suppose something could be there none-the-less. They put me on two drugs: first, a drug called Lasix, to help push the the fluids through my system. And then another called Lovenox, a 2x-per-day shot I give myself. This acts as a blood thinner and helps dissolve the blood and pass the clot. Hopefully (and I see some evidence for this already) the swelling on my legs will go down quickly.

On Wednesday, March 19 I begin chemo once again. I am going to be on a 3 drug regimen -- irinotecan plus erbitux (a chemo plus anti-body combo which I have had before) along with with avastin. Avastin is another antibody, which aids in stopping the tumors from calling new blood supplies to themselves. I've had this before, back in '04. They say that even as one or two parts of the combo starts to fail, it often happens that the combo together somehow acts stronger than the some of its parts to fights against the cancer. Let's hope so this time around. At least, for me -- I'd stopped using the irinotecan plus erbitux last March.

All the best to my faithful readers...I hope to be better about posting updates in the future.

I know, you're probably thinking, "Who is this?" Well, I met up with Jim and Patty Rielley a few days ago (along with some other friends) to catch up on the last 15+ years. It was such fun. It's amazing how personalities are still the same and how those years melt away.
Obviously, when I asked Jim if he still talked to you, his answer was unexpected. They directed me to your blog. I am heartened by your faith and by all of the enormously caring friends you have.
Dennis, you're in my thoughts and prayers. Jim has all of my info and he can explain to you who I am if you're still not sure.
I hope you have very good luck tomorrow...amy

Dennis, I haven't looked into your blog since I wrote my last comment. Robert received a new laptop and had to redo it so I lost all my favorite links...
Well, we received some worrying news about our eldest daughter yesterday from our orthopaedist: Suncica seems to have developed a cyst in her left knee and needs to be tested via magnetic resonance imaging if it might be malignant. I do not have to tell you how my heart stopped beating the first second after Robert told me the news. But then I thought it might be just some shadow, maybe some fluid or so. After calling round about 15 different phone numbers to get a real quick appointment I finally ended up lucky being offered a real early date on Thursday morning. I did not mind at all. So, Thursday, I will certainly learn more about the whole diagnosis.
So you are back on chemo now? I hope your swollen legs are getting better. It must be an awful feeling. I used to have a minor problem of swollen legs when I was pregnant with Suncica. But of course for a different reason: the summer was very hot and I was already far. How are your gorgeous nephews coming along? Are you still spending some of your time with them? I sure hope so.
Did I already mention: Robert and I joined the church choir in our village and we are singing the Easter mass on Sunday. Dennis, you are always in our thoughts and prayers. I pray to God and the Holy Mother to give you the strength and energy you need to go thru the Calvary. Concerning your faith I never ever doubted once that you might lose it. On the contrary: You are a person to be looked up to. And whenever I might have second thoughts I will think of you...
We luv you and we miss you,
your Croatian friends from Germany

You are in our thoughts and prayers, as you have been for a long time. May Christ's peace be with you in a special way as we approach the resurection and the blessed season of Easter. Your faith and strength are an example many of us can only aspire to.

Hey Dr. D,

Your strength continues to amaze me! All things are possible with God. Every 70+ year-old person in my hometown of Frostburg, MD, is praying for you thanks to my Mom. Mom and I are going to Good Friday devotions tonight at St. Michael, the parish I grew up in, and we are going to lift you up in prayer tonight to our Lord on this day of his suffering. He saved his first soul on that original Good Friday, in the hours before his death. That is the beauty of his selfless mercy, which is why I think today is such a great day to ask for his blessings on you.

God Bless....we love you!

Dennis, please know you continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. If anyone would like to join, some of us are praying for Dennis through the intercession of John Paul the Great.
Novena to John Paul II for the healing of Dennis Rich
JP II, we love you!

Holy Father, John Paul II, Shepherd and Teacher, you are now in glory in heaven, in the company of angels and saints. As in life you were bowed by illness, you are now bowed before the Throne of the Most High, in humble thanksgiving and praise. We remember you on earth, in your many holy works, and in your holy suffering. We your flock recall your prayerfulness, your energy, your charity and your boundless faith in the mercy and love of our Creator and Lord - a love which you preached in season and out, in sickness and in health, with passion and with pain. We ask you now to hear our prayers for Dennis Rich and to deliver our prayers to the Throne of the Lord, reminding Him of the words his friends said to him during his earthly sojourn,“Lord, the one you love is sick…”

We trust that your faithful prayers will be acceptable to our Merciful God, and therefore plead for your assistance, that in all things God may be glorified.
Our Father
Hail Mary
Glory Be
Novenas are prayed for 9 consecutive days…

Hi Everyone,

Unfortunately it doesn't look like the blog will be updated in the immediate future; nevertheless, I know that for many of Dennis' "faithful readers", this is the only source they have for keeping up with the news. So although it's not my first choice for an update medium, I wanted to get the word out that Dennis is now at home in hospice care. It does not appear at this time that active treatment is a viable option (but of course miracles do happen as we all know). Dennis is being kept as comfortable as possible, and he is receiving visits and calls from family and friends as he is able. I don't believe Dennis has access to e-mail, so if you'd like to leave him a message here, I will make sure that it gets passed along to him. He also checks his cell phone voicemail regularly.

Let's all continue to pray hard for Dennis and for all of his loved ones. Our hope is in this very season and Dennis' faith contines to shine as a beacon for everyone with whom he comes into contact.

On a side note, Dave Sparks or Brother Nick, I don't know if you read this blog but if so please send me an e-mail at existential.potttery@gmail.com. I believe Dennis tried to e-mail you but as I mentioned I don't think he's been able to access his e-mail.

It is with a very heavy heart that I leave this comment to let everyone know that our beloved Dennis took his leave last night at around half past 10 in the evening. He was surrounded by his family and close friends, and was lifted up in love to the Lord. I will post arrangements in the next blog comment but for now I just wanted to take a moment to remember this special person, who was Christ to so many of us, and who strived so well to unite his sufferings with those of Christ.

Dennis' brother Jim had hooked up Dennis' I-Pod so that he could have the music that he loved playing in the background in his final days with us. You could tell that he was very thankful to hear the music that he loved keeping him and his many visitors company. As you can imagine, the selection was eclectic (to say the least), consisting of over 1400 tracks ranging from Jazz to Bluegrass, to the Bluegrass/Jazz Fusion of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones; to Blues to Contemporary Christian music to progressive rock to folk music to...German language lessons!

At the very end, the I-Pod was set to play random selections and at the moment of his passing it was a great consolation to me that the Phil Keaggy song Tender Love was floating from the speakers. Many of you who read the blog know of Dennis' love for music, and his love for Phil Keaggy, and this song was truly a fitting send-off for our great friend. He will be sorely, sorely missed...

Tender Love
Phil Keaggy
Album: Phil Keaggy

It's a tender love that's gonna see you through,
Whispering to your heart
So that you'll know what to do.
It's a tender love not about to let you go,
It's a tender love and there's
So much more to know.

Love that's holding me, tender and true,
Love that's molding me, seeing me through.
I've stood in true amazement
Of all you've done for me,
My faith so small, you do it all,
And you give it all for free.

It's a tender love that's gonna see you through,
Whispering to your heart
So that you'll know what to do.
It's a tender love not about to let you go,
It's a tender love and there's
So much more to know.

Let go of the past, get up off the ground.
This love will last, this love I've found.
I stand in true amazement of all you've done for me,
I'm in a daze, yes I'm amazed,
Embracing the change, I'm free.

It's a tender love that's gonna see you through,
Whispering to your heart
So that you'll know what to do.
It's a tender love not about to let you go,
It's a tender love and there's
So much more to know.

It's a tender love that's gonna see you through,
Whispering to your heart
So that you'll know what to do.
It's a tender love not about to let you go,
It's a tender love and there's
So much more to know.

Dear beloved family and friends of Dennis,

I join together with you all from here in Rome in grieving the passing of our loving brother, Dennis, whom I have counted as a dear friend of mine over the course of the past couple of years.

Several Masses have been and will continue to be offered for the peaceful repose of Dennis' soul -- both here in Rome and in my home monastery of Richmond, VA, by me and some of my confreres. I offered two Masses for him -- on SAT 3/29 and SUN 3/30 around and on Divine Mercy Sunday (Masses for the living), and I will offer a 3rd at the Tomb of St Peter (two levels under the Papal altar) in St Peter's Basilica, Vatican City on Monday 4/7 for his peaceful repose (Mass of the Resurrection).

Our prayers and thoughts are with you all as we together, internationally, mourn our loss of Dennis but even more importantly rejoice in great hope of the resurrection in heaven's gain of Dennis!

Let us not hesitate (after giving him a few days of promised rest, as I told him in a phone call last week) to ask for his prayerful intercession before the throne of our Lord Jesus once he's gotten to settle in upstairs in our heavenly Father's great mansion set up for Dennis. I am certain that with Dennis' great faith and living testimony while with us here on earth, our Lord will listen very lovingly to Dennis' intercessions on our behalf.

Even greater things are to be accomplished by our beloved brother Dennis in God's full graces of heavenly life than he ever was able on earth, and he did some truly amazing things down here! We've only begun to see the great works of our wonderful brother!

May God bless you all superabundantly with His Easter hope, peace, and love +

It has been a pleasure and an honor to know Dennis. We worked together at Indiana University and were roommates in Los Alamos, NM for several weeks while Dennis was earning his PhD. I got to know Dennis pretty well during that time, but I learned a lot more about him after he was diagnosed with cancer. I learned what a truly remarkable and strong and uplifting spirit he possessed. I learned that he could carry an incredible burden and do it with an implacable, humbling grace.
I am saddened by Dennis' passing. The world seems dreary as a result. But I take comfort in the thought that heaven has become just a bit brighter with his presence there.

Rest easy, Dennis.
Chris

My heart goes out to all of Dennis' family and friends. I am so incredibly saddened on the loss of my old college friend. There was always something so unique about Dennis. He was truly one of the best people in this world. His faith was awe-inspiring. I am honored to have known such a good and gentle man.

Please email me at smc2870@gmail.com so that I can ask you how best to go about this.
